Importance of a Healthy Gut

We hear a lot of talk around “gut health” these days. What does that mean? Gut health impacts a lot more than just digestion. Majority of our serotonin is located in the gut as well as our immune system. If we have an unhealthy gut, it can cause a plethora of issues. So how do we keep it healthy?  Here are some of my favorite tools for maintaining a healthy gut micro biome:

*Eating fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi. Kombucha is a great fermented drink but it does contain some natural sugar.

*Doing a 24 hr fast and breaking it with fermented foods and healthy fats (my combo is 1/2 an avocado, 1/4 cup sauerkraut and pumpkin seeds). There’s research out there on the effects of longer fasts. Some research shows that fasting for 24 hours can help reset the gut (I realize there’s a lot of pro/con research on fasting but it’s worked great for me).

*Taking specific supplements. I use ION gut support, a probiotic, and glutathione (see the links below).

*Not taking antibiotics unless it’s absolutely necessary! These destroy our gut flora.

*Staying hydrated, clean eating, and exercise…obviously.

Everyone one is different but these things have truly helped me turn my gut health around. Here’s a more detailed article around gut health if you’re interested.  Gut Health

Side note…vitamin D is an important supplement to take as well. Pure Encapsulations is a great place to get high quality supplements.
