Dear CrossFit Kirkwood,

My name is Neil Jones. As you probably saw on Friday, or in the note Meg left at the gym, I am joining the CrossFit Kirkwood team! This is incredibly exciting for me. CrossFit is my passion, and I am thrilled to be part of such an amazing gym.

Since this is my first post, I wanted to tell you a little bit about myself. And I am going to start with what I am NOT.

I am not Meg’s replacement. The idea is ludicrous. There could never be a replacement for Meg. She has built this amazing community of people who are supportive and FIT! CrossFit Kirkwood will forever be Meg Mottl, and I am absolutely not here to usurp her.

I met Meg way back in 2009, very early in my CrossFit career. I had been working out at Club Fitness and CrossFit South City, and I heard that CrossFit Kirkwood was one of the best gyms around. Here’s a picture of my first visit to CrossFit Kirkwood on July 8th, 2009.

1. I sometimes get bored and shave my head.

2. Meg has been taking party pics for a LONG TIME.

From that very first meeting, I was incredibly impressed with CrossFit Kirkwood. There was a great balance of competitiveness, support, and fun. Meg was very attentive to detail and made sure everyone moved SAFELY. That is something I have always carried with me. Move safe first. Then move fast.

My next visit was later that same month. I saw some pretty great things at CrossFit Kirkwood, and I couldn’t stay away. Click here for a link to Meg’s post that day, and an extra special video of me working out without sleeves. As a side note, Leah Polaski also dropped in on that class. Since then, she has been to 5 CrossFit Games on the CrossFit Atlanta team and one time as an individual. To answer your question – yes, I’m sure she smoked me in that workout.

After that visit, I dropped in from time to time, but I started to focus on a gym of my own. In 2010, I became a part of the CrossFit South City team. Every interaction I had at CrossFit Kirkwood stuck with me, and I made virtuosity of movement my main concern. I trained hundreds of amazing athletes at CrossFit South City, and even coached a team to third place at HOA III.

In 2012, I left my full time job as a mechanical engineer to pursue CrossFit. It. Was. Terrifying. And also exciting. But mostly terrifying. I had the opportunity to open a new gym with two of my best buds, and I leapt at it. CrossFit 314 was born. Since then, I have devoted my time to improving our clients’ lives and bettering myself as a coach. I read everything I can get my hands on. I watch every video that shows up in my FB feed. And I try new ideas out myself before subjecting my clients to them. CrossFit is my passion, and I am excited to share that with CFKW.

Here’s another thing I’m not. I’m not the “boss.” I’m not here to tell people what the new regime will be like. I’m here to keep the ship on course. CrossFit Kirkwood has an IMPRESSIVE group of trainers. You know as well as I do that they are the ones who you connect with, who you credit your victories, and who you complain to about the burpees that I programmed. I’m here to assist those trainers in bettering your health and wellness.

So, what am I here for? Basically, I’m here to make sure you get the best experience possible. Over the past 6 years, Meg has created this amazing place where we all go to vent our frustrations, celebrate our victories, and sometimes just hang with our friends. I want to make sure that never changes. I will be doing the programming and teaching several classes. I’ll also be doing the majority of the behind the scenes stuff; accounting, paying taxes, cleaning, etc. But more than all of that, I’m here for YOU!! Yes, you specifically. If you’re having problems with MindBody, I can fix it. If you need some advice about diet, I’m your guy. The bottom line is that I am here for anything you need. Are you ready for me to join the CrossFit Kirkwood family. 3-2-1… wait, I have to pee.
